There are lots of preliminaries and considerations to be addressed in setting up a hospital or healthcare humor program. Shobi Dobi of The Hospital Clown Newsletter once alluded to the great amount of time and energy it takes to coordinate such an effort – and she’s right! All of the information and instruction is presented from a Grassroots (that’s me-and-you), down-to-earth perspective, based upon tried-and-true hands-on actual hospital group development and coordination, and a long-time career in marketing/PR and communications.

While I cannot claim to have been a circus clown, nor performed in other countries, I have lived-breathed-hospital clowning – which is what we’re talking about here — since beginning in 1997. I have received ongoing training from a variety of select sources, but haven’t made a ‘career’ of continuing to pile-on training by attending every conference and convention. Instead, my attention is focused on this work that looks like play. Most importantly, I’ve applied lessons in actual real-life circumstances, not mainly in theoretical classroom scenarios.

My tutelage and unwavering dedication in the trenches have resulted in acknowledged success, which can benefit you in sharing my experiences. Through my efforts, the hospital clown group that was very near to extinction was revived, is healthy today, additional new humor programs are blossoming at our hospital this year, and our program continues to train and inspire others worldwide!

(After all, the group is comprised of all-volunteers and has NO budget!)

My story is your story, really. How so, you may wonder? Because one day long ago (by now) I wanted to cheer patients in the hospital with my children. You may not have children to take with you – and frankly, I wouldn’t recommend doing it as I did way back then… but because we carried the torch for the hospital group I am honored to serve as coordinator still today, I do have valuable take-aways to save your time and effort!

I wish I would have had this information in hand at the time I became coordinator in 2003. I bought all the available materials and books at the time, but NONE of them address the needs of establishing or nurturing a healthcare humor group. It’s still that way today!

That’s why I wrote the book on this topic, established this website sharing my experiences with you, and have created several multimedia programs to assist in your effort. All of it is available when you need it – you don’t have to wait until next year’s conference, or spend days and hundreds of dollars to travel just to catch a session!

Sometimes folks think because they have been doing this type of thing for a while, they know all they need to know. Truly, the learning and fun never end! You’ll never know it all – and that’s good, because it keeps us on the quest to always do better. Exciting research in Applied Humor Therapy is ongoing, so we’re always learning new things!

My perspective is unique, and the information provided through my books and programs will assist you in your efforts, even if you have been a hospital or caring clown for many years.
