Did you ever wonder what Patch Adams was really like? Would you like to catch a glimpse of his 110-acres in West Virginia, where he is beginning construction of his 40-bed free-care rural community hospital, a long-held dream at the Gesundheit Institute? This short documentary preview clip distributed by Bullfrog Films gives a peek…
I was very fortunate to personally speak with Patch Adams after my first book was published. He so very kindly called to congratulate me on it. His words were deeply meaningful, and his thoughtfulness is forever treasured.
Hearing Patch’s positive, encouraging words for my book and work mean so much to me, and remain a “Most Memorable Moment.”
Through the implementation of his ideas of applied humor therapy in the healthcare setting, I believe he paved the way for many of us to be able to share laughter and to “be” Joy (his words) in that venue — an environment crying out for it!
It is my sincere hope through my efforts here, my books, AHeart4Clowning TalkRadio Show, Humor Bit-TV, and multimedia training programs, will encourage more healthcare humor programs, while also supporting existing programs everywhere — to keep injecting humor in the healthcare setting.

Hospital clown — are you clowning around ‘on purpose’?
We may have a fairly clear vision of our own personal purpose in life, and maybe in our applied humor therapy work… but if involved with a group in this work that looks like play, establishing a clearly-spelled-out “purpose” for the entity is advisable.
Having an identified group purpose, operating procedures and expectations goes a long way in providing needed guidelines and ensuring better quality performances by all group, troupe or ministry team members.
Here are some areas to consider, develop, write and print-out for all in your group:
- Clearly call out the group, troupe or ministry ‘mission’ (purpose/focus). What is the group supposed to do?
- Outline your group’s standard operating procedure (SOP). What is expected?
- Determine a Code of Conduct. What is/not allowed?
This topic came up when I was contacted recently by a coordinator of a hospital clown group. With growth and development, the troupe was feeling a need to establish their modus operandi in a more formal way.
Perhaps you are involved with a group that has been provoking laughter and fun for some time, and might benefit from making this commitment in formalizing your organization a bit more. If growth and effectiveness are desired or in-process, group dynamics dictate developing a framework within which to grow and operate. Having been involved with a long-time hospital clown group that was expanding, I personally experienced this as coordinator.
It might seem much ado about nothing, being “just a bunch of clowns,” after all. But there really is so much more involved in what we do. As much as I would have liked to avoid it, establishing a more formal framework was necessary, and a fact of life. Some hospitals might require it, some maybe not.
In taking a more professional approach, by formalizing group purpose and procedures, the team and hosting facility are provided more stability through structure. If you are involved with a troupe, or establishing one, you will do everyone a service in defining it and expectations of all participants.
When I saw this need to be met, I realized I had the unique perspective from which to write this book: “How to Establish a Hospital Clown or Creative Ministry Guide.” It is all based upon my first-hand experience, it became the official manual of our group, and I have presented on it several times, including to international audiences.
This book is written for all levels of proficiency and stages of group development. I highly recommend checking out:
- Chapter 2, there you will find guidance on how to: Define: Who, What, Mission and Purpose (pgs 26-27)
- Organization and Standards (pgs 34-36)
- In Chapter 9, I have included “Useful Forms” (printables)
- Checklist/Fill-in-Blank Form for Policy/Code of Conduct (pg 87)
- Do you have an application procedure established? I recommend it! A sample application (you can copy it-use it-edit it-etc) is on pg 90-91
- If your group is new or yet-to-be-established, I recommend reviewing the: ’Proposal,’ (pg 83) — make sure you can/do answer all the questions….
(NOTE: These are some of the areas to be considered in establishing or actively coordinating a healthcare humor group, the book provides more guidance; the above-listed are a few of the printable forms featured in this book.)
Written from a grassroots perspective (that’s you-and-me), not from a medically-trained professional or someone who is under contract with a medical facility or hospital group — this book is totally unique. It was thrill to write it, because I wish I would have had this same information when I worked hundreds of hours to formulate our group!
By the way, if the word “Ministry” throws you in the title, please know I fully define what is meant by that word in the first chapter. This book is intended as a guide to help others establish or improve the operations of their hospital clown, caring clown, healthcare family entertainer group, or healthcare humor program. I recognize the fact that there are some facilities that would not host an entity that sounds like it has a religious undertone. It not written nor intended to be presented in any way in an exclusive manner.
Author’s side note: I knew some day I would write a book, but believe me when I say I had no idea my first book would be “How to Establish a Hospital or Creative Ministry Guide.” But, that was the book that was in me to write (at that time), and I was compelled to write it. It has been gratifying to hear the stories shared by those who have purchased and used my books. I am so grateful to know my books have been helpful and inspiring!

Make 2011 your best year ever for Massive Healing Humor Injections! Everyone’s waiting for you…
Injecting Healing Humor, also known more widely as Applied Humor Therapy in the Healthcare Setting, is a Work of Heart. It is a gift freely given, to ease a patient’s pain or sadness, a visitor’s grief, a stress-buster for the staff. It is a recognized need in this highly-regulated and often tentative environ, as well as outside the walls for the rest of the world.
The need is so intrinsic to health, the concept so clown-simple, I can’t help but believe one of the reasons why so many wish to deny this basic human need is because it’s like reminding someone to breath. But reminding someone to breath is much more acceptable, it seems…
There are countless benefits to having a Humor Program in the Healthcare Setting. While every facility is different, as established within their parameters, the results are priceless.
For little to no money invested in such a program, if executed properly, the results and community good will could not be otherwise purchased.

Early this spring, I shared my excitement with you about launching Work of Heart: Injecting Healing Humor in the Healthcare Setting MultiMedia Program. Though difficult for me to wait for this program release, the weeks have passed as I put the finishing touches on this package. At last June 1st has arrived, and here we are officially launching this unique online MultiMedia Webinar to help encourage hospital clown and healthcare humor programs!
While it seemed a long way off at the time when I first told you about it, the span of weeks that passed is certainly not as long as the distance I have come in putting this program together for you! That meandering journey began as I set my very first baby clown foot on the hospital floor way back in 1997…
What a joy-full journey it has been! Filled with many-many hours of learning — like you… designing costumes and routines — like you. Attending training programs, conventions, conferences — like so many in our discipline. So – you know how much time you’ve spent! Oh — I and had two children I’ve been taking around with me since 1997, also — so I guess I need to multiply that time spent for prepping them, as well as me… I’m happy to report we continue making Rounds together still today – counting it all Joy!
Through the process I’ve learned quite a lot. I did not start up the hospital group that I am fortunate to coordinate since 2003, but I did establish the now-infamous Skool concept that draws folks from out of state to attend, and the ministry has become what is known as a “New Generation,” expanding to include professional family entertainers, honored to be featured in The Hospital Clown Newsletter.
Are you part of an existing hospital clown or healthcare family entertainer group? Regardless of your level of experience — do you want to start one? The lessons I have learned are ones I gladly share!
I am thrilled beyond words to officially launch my newest MultiMedia program that I believe is groundbreaking. It is filled with insight, experience, inspiration and down-to-earth strategies to help you:
- Establish a Hospital Clown/Healthcare Family Entertainer Group or further an exisiting one
- Help you Train, Prepare and Equip Your Group, including special clown arts enrichment activities and components to complement your efforts
- Help you Promote Your Group, to grow your group
This online program is presented from a Grassroots (that’s me-and-you), down-to-earth perspective, based upon tried-and-true hands-on actual hospital group development and coordination, and a long-time career in marketing/PR and communications. While I cannot claim to have been a circus clown or performed in hospitals in other countries, I have lived-breathed-hospital clowning since 1997 and my communications/Marketing/PR indie profession has been my lifelong career. My perspective is unique, and the information I can provide you through this program will help you in your efforts even if you have been a clown for many years.
Based on my experience, I have relevant information-rich content that will help you in your efforts, and hopefully keep you from spinning your wheels unnecessarily. I know how much time it takes to coordinate a group! This program is supported by my desire to encourage hospital clown and healthcare family entertainer groups globally and to help you coordinate your group, while saving you valuable time.
This webinar package is a comprehensive information and media-rich presentation. Each segment is thoroughly covered, and is like attending 3 seminars on this topic – then leaving the conference with a boatload of resource materials!
Do you need a dose of inspiration and some encouragement?
There are many preliminaries and considerations that need to be addressed in setting up – or coordinating an established hospital clown or family entertainer group, as well as training, equipping and getting the word out about your group.
Downloadable and printable materials to use for your own group are included in this online MultiMedia Webinar package, allowing you the benefit of attending a conference on your own schedule, from the comfort of your own computer! The entire program may be viewed indefinitely.
This MultiMedia program is designed as an extension to the recently-published book, How to Establish a Hospital Clown or Creative Ministry by Becky Cortino.
My book served as the official text for the first-ever ministry weekend program held by Frye Regional Medical Center’s Charlie’s Chaplains’ Hospital Clown Creative Ministry in 2007, it was expanded from the conference spiral-bound version and reprinted in 2008 by Lulu.com as a bookstore-quality paperback book. It remains as the featured text on this topic.
Although complimentary in nature, this webinar program goes well beyond the book by covering training, preparing and equipping a hospital clown or healthcare family entertainer group, in addition to promoting the group. It does not cover “How to Establish a Hospital Clown or Family Entertainer Group” as in-depth as the book, so is a recommended companion to this webinar:
